Top 5 Tips for Back to Nursing/NP School

Going back to school is daunting, sometimes scary, often overwhelming, and just all around a lot to handle. But it doesn’t have to be! Here are my five top tips for surviving nursing and NP school. This is, however, just my basic list. For more in-depth information and some words of encouragement, check out my Top 5 Tips video too (click here).

1: Stay Motivated (easier said than done, right? Wrong!)

-Write down why you wanted to go to nursing school, and keep it in your planner or journal as a reminder.

-Create a visual representation of how excited you were to get into nursing school, and keep it with you.

-Take a moment to reflect on the first two when you are feeling depleted.

2: Organize Your Thoughts and Attitude

-Reframe how you think about nursing school: hard vs. busy

-Give yourself enough time to complete assignments. Cramming will only lead to overwhelm.

-Get a planner you will actually use. And stickers. Lots of sticker. They’re fun and bring joy.

-Before school starts, take one day and write down all the assignments and due dates for the entire semester. Color-code based on assignment type. And just let yourself feel overwhelmed on this planning day. It’s the only day you’re looking at the whole picture.

-Look at your assignments in manageable chunks. Look at what the next 3 weeks look like, and see what you can do this week. Make DOABLE to-do lists.

-Once tasks are planned out, only look at your current day and focus on those attainable goals.

3: Learn How to Really Learn and Study New Information

-Don’t just go into studying willy-nilly. Utilize learning programs online, like Lecturio, that focus on science-based teaching and learning methods that encourage natural and effective learning.

*You can also use my code NURSELIZ to save 50% at Lecturio

4: Don’t Freak Out After Your First Exams and Papers

-Use the first exam to learn the teacher’s style. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t do well. Most people don’t. Unless they are unicorns.

-Learn from the first exam and change your studying methods accordingly to better serve you going forward.

-Do practice questions to get used to nursing-style questions. While you are learning, ask yourself how the information would be applicable in real life.

-Remember, test scores are not an indication of what type of nurse you will be. Don’t dwell on things you can’t change. Learn from them and move on.

5: Understand and Learn to Handle Imposter Syndrome

-Recognize what imposter syndrome is and feels like, so you can identify it in yourself.

-Know that you are not alone. We all feel this. It is normal and expected.

-Remember that you CAN do hard things. How do we know? Because you’ve already done SO MANY hard things just to get here. Make a list of those hard things and look at it often. Add to it as you do more hard things. YOU. CAN. DO. THIS!

And that’s my list! What are your top study tricks? Share them below and help other students!

Unpopular opinion time! I don’t think the soluti Unpopular opinion time! I don’t think the solution to employers abusing nurses lies with nurses being required to quit. I’ve seen comment sections riddled with “just quit” and “you aren’t stuck, you just think you are” and while I agree that if you CAN quit and aren’t stuck then GO FOR IT. It is absolutely unacceptable to be treated the way many nurses are and if you can run from that toxic situation PLEASE do. But also realize that some people can’t. And it’s pretty offensive to be belittled with repeating “just quit” over and over again while they can’t. Two huge reasons people can really be stuck at employers are Retirement and Health Insurance Benefits. Are there work arounds? Yeah. But they can be difficult to navigate, and sometimes adding one more thing to navigate is just not what people need at the moment.

The point: Let’s hold HOSPITALS accountable for being better, instead of pushing the narrative that nurses can leave and if they choose to stay then that is their problem.

I’ve been giving the CNO of UMC a hard time, and I’ve been giving the CNO of UMC a hard time, and she for sure deserves it. But you KNOW her orders to reduce the budget and solve staffing issues came from above her. Poorly executed for sure, but let’s not forget who the leader of that circus is in every hospital.

One of the huge concerns I had working in primary One of the huge concerns I had working in primary care was my patients couldn’t afford the treatment they needed. This was often not something I could do much about, except for in the realm of prescription medication. @GoodRx is an app and website that I recommended constantly to help patients afford their prescription medications. And I get to officially partner with them today to give them a shout out #ad! Here’s how it works. First, enter the medication you need, the dose, and the quantity. GoodRx will scan the pharmacies in your area and find the best deal for you or your patient that can be lower than the cash price. Simply show up with the coupon and show it to the pharmacy to get the discount! I’ve used this and recommended this for years, and am happy to answer any questions you have about it!

I do want to stress how there is no way for them to implement this. And in no way should you feel pressured to go into an isolation room without PPE. But just the idea that they recommended this in the first place is insulting and ridiculous.

NP Binder update! This time it was all about heart NP Binder update! This time it was all about heart murmurs. My nursing background is in pediatric cardiology so I usually felt pretty confident with cardiac things (flip side I’m HOPELESS with things like neuro 😳), but murmurs and valve lesions were something that tripped my students up all the time. So I made a little cheat sheet of all the basic valvular lesions. What the patho is, what symptoms patients have, what the murmur will sound like, etc. There’s also a few updated links in the resource folder!
